English Language
Proficiency (ELP)

Trucksafe helps fleets and drivers stay compliant with the English Language Proficiency requirements.

What is ELP in trucking?

English Language Proficiency (ELP) is a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requirement ensuring commercial truck & bus drivers can read, speak, and understand English sufficiently to operate safely in the U.S. This includes communicating with law enforcement, understanding road signs, and completing required documentation.

Non-compliance can lead to fines, out-of-service orders, and safety risks. Stay ahead with Trucksafe’s tools designed to assess, train, and monitor ELP compliance for your fleet.

Why ELP matters

  • Safety First: Clear communication reduces accidents caused by misunderstandings.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Avoid penalties and maintain your CSA score.

  • Operational Efficiency: Streamline inspections and avoid OOS orders.

"ELP non-compliance can lead to several problems for fleets, including escalated CSA scores, big exposure in highway accident cases, and stranded freight due to out-of-service orders. Violations can cause problems for all involved, including a carrier's customers. That's why we decided to develop a suite of tools to help carriers and drivers avoid these problems."  - Brandon Wiseman, President of Trucksafe
